What is Instagram Reels?

Recently, Instagram rolled out their TikTok competitor, called Reels. It’s built into the Instagram app, and you record and post them from the space where you normally create Stories. So what is Reels? And should you use it? We’re here to tell you everything you need to know!

What is it?

Reels is for editing short, 15 second video clips. Some of the editing options are familiar (like adding audio), and others are new (like recording speed and a timer). Stickers, gifs, text, and filters are all available for you to use.

Where do I find them?

Once you post a Reel, you’ll see a new icon pop up on your profile. It looks like a play button, and all of your Reels will be stored under that tab. From there, you have the option to share the video to your Instagram Story as well.

Why should I use it?

Nothing is ever popular at first as it will be eventually. New apps tend to take a minute to catch on, so if you start right away it gives you a leg up on the competition! Reels can be shared on your feed, but they will also show up in the Instagram Explore page. That means you can reach a larger audience—and if your target audience is Gen Z and Millennials, you should definitely try using Reels.

Unlike Stories, they last forever. While IGTV is great for series based content, Reels gives you the opportunity to create shorter, digestible content that lasts.

How should I use it?

Don’t force it! They’re designed to be fast, fun, and authentic, so don’t get stuck in the mindset of trying too hard—It’s a space to be a little less polished than you are in your feed. It’s also the perfect place to share educational content. Do you cook? Design websites? Sell houses? Share how it’s done! If your business is more product based, you can showcase new collections or give a sneak peek into a sale.
