Social Media and Social Justice

2020 was a big year for brands taking a stand. Businesses large and small made their stances known, attempting to stand in solidarity with social justice movements—but is this really necessary?

The answer is complicated. If a movement relates to your business or industry, it’s good to state your values and make your position known. If you post about every cultural movement or event regardless of how it relates to your business, it can come off as insincere. If you’re only posting about an issue because you feel like you’re supposed to and not because it’s a sincere belief you hold, your followers will recognize that.

The best way to cultivate a following that understands your values is to express those values through your social channels regularly—not just when a movement is in the spotlight. If social justice is important to you, find a way to authentically build it into your marketing strategy. You can do this through many ways:

  • Highlighting BIPOC owned businesses and entrepreneurs

  • Sharing infographics to your story

  • Making monthly donations

  • And more!

However you decide to show up, make sure it feels true to you and your brand—and if you don’t know what to say, stay quiet. Sometimes listening to others is the best decision you can make.
