Social Media Accessibility

Social Media has been a significant part of most people’s lives for years now, but it hasn’t always been accessible. Those with visual impairments or auditory impairments have struggled, and apps have not made it easy for them to participate. Recently, creators and businesses have been more intentional about making their content accessible to all types of people. Here are a few ways you can too!

Alt Text

Alt text is an added description of the image. It’s great for social media SEO, but it’s also a tool to help visually impaired users understand what’s in the image by having software like Siri read the description out loud.

Closed Captions

Creators used to have to type out their video captions by hand, but apps like Instagram and TikTok have added auto-transcription to save time. Adding captions helps those with auditory impairments or those who speak English as a second language understand what you are saying in a video.

Use Caps

If you have hashtags with multiple words in your captions, it’s important to make sure each word begins with a capital letter. For example, #CapitalizeEachWord. This allows software like Siri to read the hashtag correctly.
