Blog Writing Checklist

We’ve already shared a post about how to start writing a blog—but after you’ve written a blog, how do you make sure it’s successful? The goal of writing blogs for your business is to drive traffic to your website. Blog posts can help your page rank higher on Google, which in turn increases traffic. Don’t know where to get started? We have a few tips to help you out!

Size your photos correctly

Photos that are too small will look blurry or grainy on your page. Photos that are too large can cause your website to load slowly. Full screen images should be 1MB or less, while standard web photos should be around 300 KB. Keep the longest side of the image around 1500 px. If you need to compress your photos, there are plenty of online tools that will help you do so for free!

Make sure your photos are SEO optimized

It seems like you should just be able to upload photos to your website and be done—but that’s not true! Make sure you use relevant keywords in the name of your photo file, and separate the words with hyphens. Ex: nashville-coffee-shop. For an extra boost, use a descriptive photo caption as well!

Make sure your copy is SEO optimized

Double check every post that you write to make sure it has keywords relevant to your business. You can use tools such as Google Analytics to find out which words people are searching to discover your business, then you should find ways to fold the most popular search terms into your copy. This will help your website rank higher on Google.

Bonus: Add a Pinterest graphic

Your posts will be pinnable no matter what, but it doesn’t hurt to add a well-designed Pinterest graphic to your post. This helps you, because whenever someone chooses to pin your post, their followers will be able to see context around the post—something that would be missing with a random image. Creating a Pinterest graphic also encourages more readers to share.
