What is a Mood Board For?

When we start a branding or logo project, one of the first things that we do is create a mood board—but even if your brand has already been developed, creating a mood board is still a great idea! Why? What’s the point? Let us explain:

It helps you connect with your brand

Maybe your brand is new, or maybe you created it a long time ago. Either way, you want to make sure you’re staying true to why you made it in the first place! When you create a mood board, you’re putting together a visual representation of your brand. Of course it includes colors and fonts, but it also captures emotion, inspiration, and aesthetic. Does your brand have a mantra? Put it on the mood board. Does a sunset portrait capture the vibe of your office space? Put it on the mood board!

It helps make your visual presence cohesive

Once your mood board is complete, you have a type of brand guide! The color palette, style, and tone of your mood board is what you should use when designing your website, writing copy, and creating posts for your social media channels. If you stick to the aesthetic you created, your brand will feel cohesive across every platform you use. When your brand is cohesive, it looks more professional!

It helps you work faster

When you create a mood board, you don’t have to spend a lot of time on your internal projects. Your mood board will always be there for you to go back to when you start to work on a blog, design a graphic, or send a newsletter for your brand. Since the bulk of the design work has already been fleshed out, you can jump straight into whatever you’re working on.

Mood boards aren’t just for brands. It can also be helpful to create a mood board for an individual project, season, or goal. Try it out, and see what you think!
