Let’s Talk Fonts

If you’re scrolling through fonts, just the number of options available can make typography seem intimidating. There might be times you just want to pick a font and be done with it! Picking the right font, however, is an essential part of design—whether you’re creating a logo or making a flyer. But where do you start?

What’s out there?

Fonts typically fall into four categories:

  • Serif font ⇨ has appendages

  • Sans Serif font ⇨ has no appendages

  • Script font ⇨ looks like cursive

  • Decorative font ⇨ all other font styles

Within each category there are subcategories, including:

  • Brush ⇨ appears drawn by a marker or paintbrush

  • Slab Serif ⇨ appendages are less “fancy” than traditional serifs

  • Retro ⇨ matches the style of a specific era

  • Monospace ⇨ every letter takes up the same amount of space

What do you need?

Before you choose a font, it’s helpful to think about what you will be using it for. Will it be used in a professional office like a law firm, or in a fun environment like a cupcake shop? Is the business personality traditional or modern? Is it going to be used on business cards or for packaging? All of these questions will help you determine which font you should choose.

Where can you look?

If you’ve looked through all the fonts on your computer and you aren’t happy with them, don’t fret! One of our favorite places to look for custom fonts is Creative Market. There, you can search through custom fonts from hundreds of designers—and you can search fonts by category!
